As part of the study of the subject "General and Social Pedagogy", a lesson was recently held with applicants for the program "Social Work" to familiarize them with the program "Welcome to Sesame Street".

Sesame Street is a new curriculum from the Sesame Workshop that uses the power of play to engage and interactively educate children ages 2-6. The program as a holistic system provides for the comprehensive development of the child. It can be used as a separate learning program or as an addition to an existing program. It can also be used in times of crisis.

The main element of the Sesame Street program is five-minute videos (cartoons) that divide the learning process step by step by educational areas.

This program offers interactive learning materials that can be used for face-to-face and distance learning; as an addition to an existing program or as a separate training program.

It has been processed by the applicants:

  • Description of the Sesame Street program and the pedagogy behind it
  • Step-by-step lesson plans for each of the educational areas and topics.
  • We watched and discussed educational videos in the following areas:  Social and Emotional Learning, Environment, and Child Health and Safety.

During each stage of the program review, applicants were asked to discuss several questions, namely:

  • What did you see/feel while watching the cartoon?
  • What can a child see/feel?
  • How would you use this cartoon in your work?

The results were:
Applicant_1: "In my work, I would use the program to develop social and emotional skills, you can use the cartoon as a stimulus to discuss social and emotional topics such as empathy, cooperation and problem solving. And also to create a positive atmosphere when working with children."

Applicant_2:  "While watching the cartoons, I felt calm and interested, and I was convinced that it is possible to develop important social skills, communication, interaction, and support through cartoons."

Student_3:  "The characters are very sensitive to each other, bright, eye-catching, engaging, and there is a great script in each cartoon. Children who watch Welcome to Sesame Street are likely to feel happy, interested, satisfied and inspired."

Thus, the developed program "Welcome to Sesame Street" demonstrated the possibilities of using cartoons and discussing them with children for the comprehensive development of the child, as well as some areas that can be used in times of crisis.
