In the context of the celebration of the International Day for the Struggle for Women's Rights, protest against gender inequality and discrimination, Sumy State University students spoke about the history of feminist movements in Ukraine and the world.
The event was held within the framework of the elective course “Gender Studies: Concepts and Practices” taught under the Erasmus+ grant program Jean Monnet Module “European values of intercultural dialogue in education: interdisciplinary and inclusive approaches” (“European values of intercultural dialogue in education: interdisciplinary and inclusive approaches” - EUROVALID).
The applicants presented research projects on the history of feminist movements, discussed modern varieties and trends of feminism, touched upon the role of suffragettes in the struggle for women's suffrage, and identified areas of work for contemporary Ukrainian feminists. The ideas of radical feminism and intersectional feminism provoked a lively discussion.
“Researching the history of feminism, identifying the features of each of its varieties turned out to be an interesting task that opened up new horizons for women's struggle for gender equality and against gender discrimination. Despite significant achievements, feminism does not lose its relevance and importance, as there are still many unresolved issues regarding the social status of women in the modern world, and many people are still in the grip of gender stereotypes,” Anastasia Vinichenko shared her impressions.
